Word Games
Words are, in a word, important.
This applies not only to writing and speaking, but reading and listening as well.
You’ve got to be diligent about words. Missing even one can mean the difference between aggressive (I’m going to fuck you up!) and sexually aggressive (I’m going to fuck you!). This is only one example of the effect of words in the workplace.
It’s good to listen to more than just some of the words in the office environment. I know it’s tempting to zone out when your boss is blabbing about whatever he blabs about, but learn from my mistakes. Learn hard!
Let’s say, hypothetically, that my boss, when coaching me on how to best impress the company CEO in my upcoming presentation to the board, said, “You better bring your A-game.”
OK, that’s what he said (hypothetically, remember?) … but I was only half-assedly listening (as per usual) and I missed what turned out to be a key word.
Suffice it to say, I had to intentionally lose the tallest Jenga ever. And I’m genius at Jenga. I’ve got excellent steady-finger control and nerves fortified with iron.
I took a hit to my ego that day, my friends. But I kept my job. And nailed the presentation … hypothetically.
Thanks, jangly bangles! You saved my ass again.
And who ever would’ve thought that “your” could make such a difference? Not me. Not ever. I’m not interested in “your” anything. Typically.
Just kidding. I love your stories.
